What is CBG and why is it so precious?

Most people are already familiar with CBD extracted from hemp and its benefits and effects. But there is a lesser known, yet incredibly effective cannabinoid called Cannabigerol or CBG. It is not present in large quantities in most strains, but this little-known cannabinoid is important for several reasons. Let us introduce you to this precious cannabinoid that we are very excited about.

What is CBG?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is one of the organic compounds found in the cannabis plant. CBG is the precursor from which all other cannabinoids are synthesized, which is why it’s often referred to as the “mother” of cannabinoids. During the lifetime of the plant, natural enzymes transform CBGA, the acid form of CBG, into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA, that later break down to form CBG, CBD, THC, and CBC when heated. Therefore, CBG for example helps make CBD. Because it serves as a building block for other cannabinoids the amount of CBGA left for the formation of CBG is very low.

Like CBD, CBG is a nonintoxicating cannabinoid and has no psychoactive effects, meaning it will not make you high. It has been found that CBG may be able to counteract THC’s intoxicating effects.

How does CBG work and what are the benefits of CBG?

Like CBD CBG works with the human body’s built-in endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS works to keep the body in a balanced state. In general, the endocannabinoid system in our body performs different functions specific to each area. For example, at an injury site, the ECS can help regulate immune cells to limit inflammation. While CBD acts mostly indirectly with the endocannabinoid system as a regulator, CBG interacts with the cannabinoid receptors in the brain and can provide more direct effects to the system.

The interest in CBG is just beginning to emerge and research about its health and wellness benefits is still in its infancy. Early findings indicate that CBG acts on very specific physiological systems and problems, and results for medicinal use are extremely promising. It is believed to offer a whole host of therapeutic benefits including anti-inflammatory properties that could potentially help in the treatment of many different chronic diseases, antibacterial properties as well as neuroprotective effects.

Why is CBD so precious?

Being considered a minor cannabinoid, CBG has not received the same attention as CBD due to the low amounts of CBG present in most strains of hemp. A harvested plant will generally contain up to 1% of CBG (rarely up to 2%) compared to up to 20% of CBD. Given this scarcity CBG is expensive to produce, as you need to extract 20 times the amount of biomass to extract the same amount of CBG.

One way to maximize CBG amounts is to harvest the plant much earlier in its cycle, and before CBGA forms the acidic precursors of other cannabinoids. But by definition, this process sacrifices the extraction of CBD.

There are also new and specific strains that have been and are being developed that have a higher presence of CBG than the standard hemp plants. These strains are typically priced exponentially higher than CBD dominant hemp plants. This is due to limited availability of the plant and the increased cost of cultivating and growing a CBG dominant hemp plants.

How do you get the most wellness benefits out of CBG?

As CBG is very precious, you want to make sure you get the most out of it. First, look for a product that has a high concentration of natural CBG in it. Double Down uses a patent pending solvent less extraction process and technology to ensure that all the terpenes and attributes of the plant in their complete and original molecular structure are maintained.

Secondly, make sure the CBG is absorbable by your body. Double Down does not use oil as a carrier agent (oil-based additives are not absorbed very well by the body, 5-7% absorption). Double Down uses organic vegetable glycerin that is water soluble and therefore makes the full CBG amount available to the body.

What is a CBG/CBD blend and is it effective?

CBG and CBD both act on the internal endocannabinoid system of the body and share a wide array of potential benefits. CBG and CBD can support users with a lot of the same conditions, but a general differentiation is that CBG is more effective for mental/neurological disharmony and CBD is more effective for physical/bodily disharmony.

It has been found that using these cannabinoids in combination is more beneficial than using any one alone. They have been observed to participate in the entourage effect, magnifying the therapeutic effect of each one when taken together. As CBG and CBD influence the endocannabinoid system in different ways some compare their combination with a lock and a key system. While CBD regulates the system, CBG acts directly with the receptors. Together they open a wide array of possibilities to support people with a variety of conditions and optimize the assimilation by the body.

Based on the benefits of this powerful combination Double Down has developed a groundbreaking 50:50 wellness blend of high potency CBG combined with CBD that delivers a unique balance of physical and mental wellness.

Why can Double Down produce CBG based extracts at affordable prices?

In order to offer affordable CBG products we have developed direct and close relationships with our partner farms in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.  We have dedicated acreage at these farms, are able to identify and select the finest CBG strains and cultivate and grow large amounts of plants from these strains. This allows us to have a steady supply of CBG rich hemp.

In addition, our patent-pending extraction process is designed to protect all cannabinoids and terpenes of the hemp plant and is therefore more efficient in the extraction of high potency CBG.
